“Too many cooks spoil the broth.” It’s an old saying we’ve heard many times in childhood. If we put it in today’s IT monitoring context, we could change it to “too many tools spoil the insights and efficiency.” IT teams across organizations have deployed multiple tools over the decades to monitor and track the performance of networks, databases, and applications and to ensure the smooth running of the business. Add to it the daily challenges IT executives face, such as hybrid and multi-cloud, the Internet of Things (IoT), data management, distributed architectures, cloud-native applications, microservices, containerization, and increased security threats.
With these evolving complex IT landscapes, it has become challenging for existing monitoring tools to provide proper root cause analysis and other valuable insights to the business. Various teams and departments are overloaded with alerts and disjointed analytics and have difficulty accessing the correct actionable insight needed to identify, prioritize, and resolve issues quickly. According to Gartner,[i]
many enterprises already have upward of 15 monitoring tools and do not wish to add further complexity.

Blind Spot One: No Single Source of Truth

If 50 alerts arrive, are they 50 unique issues or 10 issues with five alerts per issue? How can teams cluster alerts and make recommendations?

And, with so much data flowing in and out, how do you know whose data’s accurate? How are the tools collecting data, and at what intervals do they collect it? This leads to manual correlation across domains and is a recipe for disaster.
